Modern Curbless Shower Remodel in Encinitas, CA | Built for Luxury and Durability

Edgar Neria • July 3, 2025
When life plans change, smart design can adapt with them. That’s exactly what happened during the remodel of this main bathroom at this home in Encinitas, CA.

Originally envisioned as a personal sanctuary, this project quickly evolved into creating a stylish, durable space ready for rental use, without sacrificing modern design, accessibility, or quality craftsmanship. Here’s how Team Renovate transformed this master bathroom with a curbless walk-in shower, Schluter® waterproofing, and premium finishes.

The Challenge | Outdated Layout and Changing Needs

The original bathroom featured:

  • A traditional bathtub and a small enclosed walk-in shower, cramping the space and limiting flow.
  • Outdated finishes that didn’t reflect a clean, modern look.
  • A plan for personal living that later shifted to renting the property, requiring added durability and easy maintenance.

The challenge was to balance sleek aesthetics with practical longevity, all while completely reimagining the layout.

Our Solution | A Curbless Shower and Whole-Bathroom Waterproofing

After discussing the client's needs (and adapting to their change of plans), we recommended:

  • Removing the tub and expanding the shower area for a true open-concept design.
  • Installing a curbless walk-in shower for accessibility, style, and ease of use.
  • Adding a frameless glass shower enclosure for a clean look and effective splash protection (essential for rental use).
  • Using the Schluter® waterproofing system not just in the shower, but throughout the bathroom floor for complete moisture protection.
  • Refreshing the entire unit with new vanities, toilets, and stair finishes to match the updated modern aesthetic.

By combining premium materials and strategic design upgrades, we created a space built for both daily luxury and long-term resilience.

The Renovation Details | A Complete Gut Remodel

This was a full down-to-the-studs rebuild, including:

  • Removal of the existing bathtub and old shower.

  • Installation of a curbless walk-in shower with a linear drain for seamless accessibility.

  • Hexagon marble mosaic tile on the shower floor and in the recessed wall niche.

  • Large-format porcelain tile installed on all walls and floors for a modern, cohesive look.

  • Custom-built shower bench and recessed niche for added functionality.

  • Frameless glass enclosure installed for a clean, modern finish.

  • Schluter® waterproofing system applied to the entire bathroom and all tiled floors throughout the unit.

  • Updated toilets, vanities, and plumbing fixtures across the home.

  • New tile-and-carpet combination stair system, tile on edges, carpet runner down the center, for a polished and durable transition between floors.

Project Highlights | Quick Facts

  • Location: Encinitas, CA
  • Scope: Full master bathroom and multi-area upgrade
  • Budget: $36k
  • Design Focus: Modern luxury, accessibility, durability for rental

The Result | A Modern, Durable, High-Value Bathroom

Today, the Sari Weisenberg main bathroom showcases sleek modern style and smart protection, perfect for rental needs but still stylish enough to feel like a personal retreat. The curbless walk-in shower, marble mosaics, and whole-room waterproofing offer both elegance and peace of mind.

It’s a perfect example of Team Renovate’s ability to adapt, elevate, and deliver, no matter how plans evolve.
